Research

Our current research focus is on beyond 5G (B5G) and 6G cellular networks (AI and ML for wireless communications, integrated aerial-terrestrial networks, RIS-aided wireless communications, spectrum and resource management, massive multiple access, scheduling, power control, multi-band massive MIMO systems, fronthauling/backhauling, wireless network virtualization, cloud-RAN). Our research is/has been supported by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Discovery Grants Program, Strategic Partnership Grants, Collaborative Research and Development Grants, Engage Grants, University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowship, Graduate Enhancement of Tri-Council Stipends (GETS), and several of our industry partners (TII, Samsung AI Centre (Montreal, Canada), TELUS, Huawei, InterDigital, InfoMagnetics Technologies Corporation).

Distributed and self-organizing heterogeneous wireless access networks: Design, analysis, and optimization

To cope with the ever-increasing user population and traffic demand, the forthcoming generations of cellular networks will evolve to large-scale and highly complex heterogeneous systems. Such a system will interconnect a massive number of intelligent radio devices such as small cell base stations, relays, and remote radio heads which may use different radio access technologies. With a large-scale deployment of these new network elements in multiple network tiers, a distributed and self-organizing network operation will be essential to achieve scalability, stability, robustness, and agility. With self-organization, minimum control from an external entity and manual intervention will be required, and hence, the network operators will incur low operational expenditures. For distributed and self-organizing heterogeneous cellular networks, we will develop scalable and robust algorithms. Using these algorithms, the network elements can sense/observe the radio environment, perform reasoning and leaning, and adapt the radio resource allocation to achieve optimal network operation (e.g., in terms of coverage, spectral efficiency, power efficiency and throughput) in presence of uncertainties in the radio environment and limited available resources for control signaling.

Radio resource management for spectrum and energy efficient design of 5G networks

(Ongoing, 2014-2017)

5G wireless networks are expected to be a mixture of network tiers of different sizes, transmit powers, backhaul connections, different radio access technologies (RATs) that are accessed by an unprecedented numbers of smart and heterogeneous wireless devices. Specifically, in 5G networks, there will be deployments of a large number of low power nodes, relays, and device-to-device (D2D) communication links with a much higher density than today’s macrocell networks. The traditional methods for radio resource and interference management (e.g., channel allocation, power control, cell association or load balancing) in single-tier networks (even some of those developed for two-tier networks) may not be efficient in this environment and a new look into the radio resource management (RRM) problem will be required. Again, in addition to the traditional spectrum efficiency and quality-of-service (QoS), energy efficiency will be one of the most desirable characteristics of 5G cellular networks. In this project, we will develop and study novel methods for radio resource and interference management in multi-tier and multi-RAT cellular networks, which will enable spectrum and energy-efficient design and deployment of 5G cellular wireless networks.

Ekram Hossain, Ph.D., P.Eng.

Professor, IEEE Fellow

Dr. Hossain is a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada. He received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from University of Victoria, Canada, in 2001. He was a University of Victoria Fellow and also a recipient of the British Columbia Advanced Systems Institute (ASI) graduate student award. He was a Distinguished Lecturer for the IEEE Communications Society (for two terms during 2012-2015). Currently he is a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society. He is a Member of the IEEE Press Editorial Board. He served as the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Communications Surveys and Tutorials from 2012-2016. Dr. Hossain is a registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in the province of Manitoba, Canada. He was elevated to an IEEE Fellow (class of 2015) "for contributions to spectrum management and resource allocation in cognitive and cellular radio networks".
