We use a variety of computer systems, both external and internal. This page introduces them, starting with the local systems.

The New Cluster

We call this system the New Cluster, although it, too, is getting old. It was installed in the Spring of 2009. At the time of installation, it consisted of one server node and seven compute nodes, each with two times four cores. (This is shown in the pictures below.) It has since (summer 2010) been extended by three more nodes containing two times six cores each.

The Old Cluster

This system was bought in late 2003 and installed in early 2004 − and it is still serving us faithfully! As can be seen, it was built from separate computers in true BEOWULF fashion, the most economical way of doing it at the time.

External Systems

We use various external systems, essentially wherever we can find them! An incomplete current/ recent list includes: (See the links for descriptions and, in many case, pictures of the respective systems.)

  • Westgrid
  • ACEnet
  • SHARCNET
  • The URACIL cluster of the Wetmore group at the University of Lethbridge, AB
  • The supercomputing facilities at the EMSL in Richland, WA
