On July 18, 1659 as recorded in the Lord Mayor's Court Deposition at Corp. of London Record Office, Andrew Moorwood, Gent. of "Hallows", Derby, Eng., aged 30, deposes that a plantation & goods left in the hands of John Arnet, Gent. of Barbados and listed in an inventory of March I, 1652, were the property of the deponent's brother, Anthony Moorwood, to which the deponent is entitled as administrator. By deed of 13 Dec 1653, the deponent surrendered the property to the said John Arnet, Tobias Frere, Esq., Sgt. Maj. Thornhill, Capt. Philip Bishop and Capt. Christopher Carew of Barbados, but had no receipt from Arnot. He names as his attornies, Mr. Charles Sanford, Mr. Thomas Hasselwood, and Robert Marriot of Barbados, merchants.

In 1660, Tobias provided his brother, John Frere with another 330 acre plantation in Christ Church which was bought by a merchants' syndicate which included: John Frere, Thomas Waite, Robert Rumballs, Thomas Thompson, Samuel Adams and Edward Estwick. This syndicate owned over 10,000 acres of land and used Hopcon as their surveyor. In the 1640s, Estwick had sold his land to the Seawells.

About 1663, Tobias Frere, Esq. married Elizabeth Middleton, daughter of Thomas Middleton, an English merchant from London who owned the estates of "Mount" and "Valley" in St. George's Parish, which was managed by Tobias as one of his attornies. Tobias & Elizabeth had two children, Tobias Frere, Jr. and Elizabeth Frere.

In 1670, a dispute arose between Capt. Tobias Frere and his brother, Col. John Frere over the ownership of some 120 acres of land which embittered their relationship for many years. It was taken to the Court of Error and John Frere was given control of the land. However, after many years of fighting, this decision was overturned by the Council and the land was given to Tobias Frere.

In 1670, Alexander Piddock, son of his sister & John Piddock, made a will leaving Tobias as his Executor. The will named his wife, Mary Piddock, and their son, Tobias Piddock. It stated that the Piddock's were related to the Freres. Tobias leased the estate to his son, Tobias Frere Jr., and their neighbor Lt. Col. Philip Bishop of "Gibbons". The six acres of land were bounded by: Tobias Frere, Philip Bishop, John Williams and Mary Ann Tyler. Witnesses were: Samuel Williams, Thomas Lett is (former husband of Rose Frere), and Henry Moseley. This small plantation was somehow later owned by Tobias Frere.

In 1672 his father-in-law, Thomas Middleton, died and his son, Benjamin Middleton, took control of the 379 acre estate of the "Mount".

Tobias became the Executor for the estate of his brother, Richard Frere and guardian of his sons, Thomas 11 and Tobias. In the 1670s, he sought the Council's assistance in claiming legaciesfor Thomas from the estates of John Gunning and from John Jackson, who had married his sister, Elizabeth Frere, in 1651.

In 1673, Tobias Frere was listed as having 400 acres of land in Christ Church on the report sent by Gov. Atkins to the King of eminent citizens of Barbados. In 1675, he and his partner, Philip Bishop leased lands and storehouses in Oistin from Richard Williams.

In the 1679 Barbados census, Capt. Tobias Frere, Esq. of Christ Church Parish was in Col. Samuel Newton & Col. Simon Lambert's Regiments of Horse, Richard Elliott's Co., having 3 horses & 6 defaults. owning 400 acres of land, 5 white servants and 150 negroes.

In 1682, Tobias released Benjamin Middleton of any debts owed to him. Witnesses: James Fauntleroy, William Fauntleroy, and Edward Burke.

Capt. Tobias Frere, Sr. Esq. died in 1683 in Christ Church Parish. (His date of death could not have been 24 Oct 1683, because his will was proved on 7 Aug 1683). His will (28 Jun 1683, Pr. 7 Aug 1683) stated, "To be buried in my garden in the vault where I have erected for that purpose & where the corpse of my late wife lieth; ...to daughter Elizabeth Frere a legacy of 1,000 Lbs. paid out of the estate at 21; ...to last wife's dau Arrabella Pott, now wife of Samuel Pott, Gent; ...to neice Barbara Frere, dau of brother Thomas Frere dec'd; ...to nephew Tobias Frere, s/o brother John Frere; ...to neice Alc Will widow; ...to Godson Richard Hasselwood, s/o Thomas Hasselwood Esq; ...to son & heir Tobias Frere Executor. If son die without heirs, then nephew Tobias Frere, s/o brother Richard Frere dec'd, would inherit two thirds of the estate and nephew Thomas Frere, s/o brother Richard Frere dec'd, would inherit one third of the estate. Witnesses: Capt James Fauntleroy, William Spight. Anthony Harris, Thomas Hayward.

viii. JOHN FRERE, ESQ., b. 21 October 1626, Occold, Suffolk, England; d. 15 May 1691, Christ Church, Barbados; m. (I) ANNE PEARSON, Abt. 1653, England; m. (2) FRANCES SEAWELL, 02 February 1664/65, Christ Church, Barbados.

Notes for JOHN FRERE, ESQ.:

Burke's Landed Gentry: John Frere, b. 1626, settled in Barbados, m. and had issue.

John Frere, Sr., 6th son of Thomas Frere & Anne Wallis of Occold & Bressingham, Suffolk, Eng., baptized 21 Oct 1626. As an English merchant and investor, he had gone to Barbados sometime before 1650 and was the first of the family to settle in Christ Church Parish, Barbados.

In England about 1653, he married his first wife, Anne Pearson, sister of the Bishop of Chester, and brought her to Barbados.

By 1654, he owned a plantation in Christ Church Parish called "Coverley" with 125 acres of land which had been purchased from two early landowners: Mr. Thomas Coverley with 80 acres, and Henry Gray with 45 acres. In 1654, John also provided his brother, Tobias Frere, Esq. with 125 acres of land by sale, lease or pannership. It was this land that caused many legal battles and a split between the brothers in 1670.

The minutes of Council recorded in May 1655 that Capt. John Frere had commenced an action against John Woodworth and his wife in 1654 in the precinct court of Christ Church for trading with one of his servants, Henry Brereton. In 1658, John Frere won the action and recovered 7,000 pounds of sugar in damages. The court held that Woolworth, by trading with the servant, had undermined Frere's property rights and title in his servant, and the servant's servitude was extended by two years.

On 25 October 1655, Henry Simons of St. Olave, Southwark, Surrey, citizen and tallow chandler of London, aged 53, deposed that on 20 August 1641, Richard Worsam, citizen and weaver of London, and his son John Worsam of London, merchant, signed a financial obligation to Mathew Wilton, citizen and tallow chandler of London, who had appointed John Fryer and William Fryer of Barbados, merchants, as his attornies. (Lord Mayor's Court of London, 6).

On May 30, 1660, Robert Dover, the younger, Gent. of Diss, Norfolk, Eng., aged 33, gave a deposition that Richard Dade of Diss, brother and administrator of John Dade of London, merchant, who died at sea on 30 April last, appointed Capt. John Frere and Mr. Thomas Haslewood, merchants of Barbados, as his attornies to recover his brother's estate. (Lord Mayor's Court Deposition at Corp. of London Record Office)

In 1660, John and Tobias Frere belonged to a Merchants' Syndicate with Thomas Waite, Robert Rumballs, Thomas Thompson, Samuel Adams and Edward Estwick. The Syndicate owned over 10,000 acres of land in Barbados and used Hopcott as their surveyor. Edward Estwick had sold his land to the Seawells in the 1640s. Tobias helped John to acquired 1/3 of a 330 acre estate in Christ Church Parish.

John Frere had established himself in the local plantocracy and rose in the ranks of the militia from Captain, to Major, and then a Colonel. He was a Justice of the Peace and elected to the House of Assembly for Christ Church Parish from 1661 to 1667. He was apparently a feisty and assertive individual and had plenty of controversy.

John and Anne had six children: Tobias Frere, Sr. (1655-1709), John Frere, Jr. (1656-1708), Anne Frere (1658-1693), Rachel Frere (1659-1661), Elizabeth Frere (b. 1660-1730), and Joan Frere (1663-1722). Their daughter, Rachel, died in 1661 and then on October 11, 1664, John's wife, Anne (Pearson) Frere died in Christ Church Parish, leaving him with five children between the ages of I to 9 years old.

Four months later, on 2 February 1665, Capt. John Frere married Frances Seawell, sister of Richard Seawell, a neighbor of his who owned about 550 acres in 1679. John and Frances had 4 daughters: Frances Frere (1671-1743), Martha Frere (1672-1673), Mary Frere (1674-1743) and Alice Frere (1689-1721).

He arranged for his children to receive an excellent education. It is assumed that his sons were educated in England as was the custom at that time, but it is not known where. However, his daughters, Anne, Elizabeth and Joan were taught by Sir Paul Paynter of "Lower Estate", Barbados and of "Muswell Hill" in Middlesex. Eng.

In October 1667/68, he bought 44 2/3 acres from Edward Oistin for 62,497 pounds of muscovado sugar. The land was bounded by Thomas Waite, Francis Carnsew, Henry Markland, Mr. Mahon, John Harrowe, Darby Dunne, Nicholas Stoakes and his other lands. Witnesses were: Nathaniel Kingsland, James Oistin, Richard Seawell and his brother, William Frere.

In 1672, Col. Philip Bishop complained to the Council that he had been assaulted by Col. John Frere. Col. Bishop was a partner of his brother, Tobias Frere, who was then in a bitter dispute with John Frere over some 120 acres of land. Tobias brought a case of slander before the Council against John in 1673.

When Gov. Atkins sent a census to the King in 1673, he listed John Frere as one of Barbados' substantial landowners having 300 acres of land. This included the 125 acres of land which was claimed by both John and his brother, Tobias. In 1670, the dispute arose and lasted for many years over the ownership of the 125 acres and was taken to the Court of Errors and the Council. At first the Court of Errors awarded its ownership to John, but then after many years, the Council reversed this decision by giving it to Tobias, who ended up with it. This embittered the relationship between these brothers.

In 1675, John bought 10 acres from Cornelius & Margaret Bryan, bounded by Garren Dillon and his own lands. Witnesses were: William Frere, Henry Markland, Richard Perryman and Christopher Clarke. This purchase consolidated his estate into 180 acres which formed the core of what today is still called, "Coverley" afler its first owner.

When the 1679 Barbados census was taken, Lt. Col. John Frere had 4 men complete with arms in Hon. Col Christopher Lyne's Regiment of Foot, in Col. Samuel Newton & Col. Simon Lambert's Regiments of Horse with 1 horse, and owned 180 acres of land in Christ Church Parish, with 80 negroes, and a total of 300 acres of land on Barbados.

In 1682, Col. John Frere, Esq. acted as the attorney for Francis Furness whho brought a case against Charles Bailey for torturing the slaves in his care by dropping melted wax on them.

Col. John Frere had a total of 10 children: 2 sons and 4 daughters with Anne (Pearson) Frere and 4 daughters with Frances (Seawell) Frere. There seems to have been an early settlement of his estate with the children of Anne (Pearson) Frere.

In 1682, Col. John Frere gave to his eldest son & heir, Tobias Frere, age 27, as a gifl "for his advancement" half of his plantation of 180 acres. This included half of the six coppers, three stills, two windmills, one boiling house, one stillone dwelling house, half of the outhouses & other appurtenances, and half of the horses, cattle and negroes, (there were 81 slaves, 4 horses & 30 cattle on the estate). The land was bounded by John Watkins, Richard Seawell, John Heywood, John Wise, William Frere and Henry Markland. Witnesses were: Abel Alleyne, Allen Culpepper and Richard Seawell. Abigail (Turner) Frere, a cousin of the witnesses, had been the wife of Tobias for 7 years.

It is not known what settlement was made to John & Anne's remaining children: John Frere, Jr., Anne Frere, Elizabeth Frere or Joan Frere, since they were grown or married by 1682. Tobias Frere, Sr. had married Abigail Turner in 1676. John Frere,Jr. (who was born either in 1656 or 1662) was not married in 1682. In 1678, Anne Frere married John Dorne who was from another prominent merchant family. Her second marriage was to Rev. Gilbert Ramsay, rector of Christ Church Parish Church. Elizabeth Frere had married Capt. Emanuel Hutson about 1678, and had acquired his plantation of "Hutson's" at his death. Her second marriage was to Major John Pilgrim in 1700. The estate formerly called "Hutson's" was changed to "Frere Pilgrim ". Joan Frere marriedfour different times to men of considerable wealth. Her first marriage in 1678 was to Col. Thomas Lewis of Christ Church. When he died in 1689, she acquired considerable property in England and Barbados. Her second marriage was to Samuel Crispe in 1691, her third marriage to Robert Carleton in 1695, and then her fourth marriage in 1704 was to Robert Lowther, who became the Governor of Barbados.

Therefore, when Col. John Frere made his will, "written 2nd year of William & Mary", he lefl the balance of his estate to his second wife, Frances, and their 3 surviving daughters. By his will (6 Jan 16____, Pr. 23 Apr 1691), he named his daughters: Frances Frere, Mary Frere, & Alice Frere, all under age, who received bequests of 500 Lbs. each at marriage or 21; and his wife, Frances, as executrix, & guardian of the minor children. Witnesses: E. Ethras. Isaac Ragg, Marcus Brandt. Elizabeth Smith, & Richard Cafford. (RB6/30, p. 17)

Notes for ANNE PEARSON:

Anne Pearson, d/o _ Pearson of Creoke, Norfolk, England and sister of John Pearson, the Bishop of Chester, was the mother of 8 of John's children. She died 11 Oct. 1664.

Notes for FRANCES SEAWELL:
