General Structure of Leptiminus Kilns

The kilns were built into the bedrock and lined with bricks. All of their stoking doors for fuel faced east, which suggests a service corridor once ran north-to-south along this side. A cut in the floor of the fuel chamber probably allowed air intake from the bottom of the stoking door, and hot air circulated within the kilns through perforations in the oven floor. The roofing was made of mud brick and curved inwards. The top was probably domed and was likely equipped with a small outlet for smoke to escape. When a kiln was abandoned it was stripped of its brick linings and internal fixtures, which were likely reused elsewhere.
