TRANSFORMATION ­ transfer of foreign genetic material from one species to another.

In nature, the bacterium Agrobacterium tumefaciens can transfer DNA (T­DNA) into plant cells.

T-DNA contains genes encoding

• opine production - Opines serve as a food source for Agrobacterium
• hormone stimulation - uncontrolled growth of transformed plant tissue: crown gall disease eg. grapes, rose, peach willow
