About this document

This is a web version of Leonard Bloomfield’s celebrated Algonquian sketch, a foundational work in Algonquian linguistics. It was prepared by Will Oxford at the University of Manitoba. The only changes from the original publication are the addition of hyperlinks, the correction of some obvious minor typographical errors (view list of corrections), and (for now) the omission of the lengthy bibliography.

You will need an up-to-date browser and a modern version of the Times New Roman font in order for the document to display properly.

How to cite

It is best to regard the web version simply as a key to the original published version. Bibliographic references should cite the original published version only: Bloomfield, Leonard. 1946. Algonquian. In Linguistic structures of Native America, ed. by Harry Hoijer et al., pp. 85–129. Viking Fund Publications in Anthropology 6. New York. Details can be checked in this scan of the original version (8.5mb).

If you re-use the HTML file in any way (such as posting it elsewhere or annotating it), please acknowledge that I prepared the file.

Copyright

The Sketch was published in a volume of the Viking Fund Publications in Anthropology. (The Viking Fund changed its name to the Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research in 1951.) The volume appears to have passed into the public domain, as its copyright was not renewed 28 years after publication. See the explanation here and the copyright records made available by Stanford and Google.
