JOHN FRIER1 FREER was born Abt. 1660, and died 14 January 1708/09 in Johns Island, Charleston Co., SC. He married SARAH Abt. 1693 in England.
Notes for JOHN FRIER FREER: This research has explored the possibility that John Frier Freer and his wife, Sarah, may have come from Barbados before arriving in Charles Town, SC in September 1694. Although there was much information about the Frere families of Barbados who had come from Suffolk Co., Eng., there are five main reasons in reconstructing the family's History that makes it is doubtful that they were directly related: 1. The nearest possibility was John Frere, Esq. (1626-1691) who had 3 sons named John, but they all died as infants by 1662. 2. No record of any kind could be found in Barbados of John Frere between 1662 and 1694, or a marriage record for John Frere and Sarah, or a record of their having a ticket to leave Barbados. 3. There is no proof where they came from upon their arrival in Charles Town. 4. The Coats of Arms of the SC Freers has 3 dolphins and those of the Freres of Barbados all have 2 leopards in pale. 5. The names given the SC Freer children does not follow the same pattern as those in Barbados, i.e. Solomon & Joseph Freer vs. Tobias & Thomas Frere. Therefore, until further information has been received with better proof. it will be assumed that John & Sarah Frier/Freer came directly from England.
Sometime before September 1694, John Frier and his wife, Sarah, arrived in Charles Town, SC and claimed their arrival rights on 3 September 1694. Note in the following document, their surname is spelled phonically in various ways as: "Ffrieer, Fryar, Friar". It is not known when the surname "Frere" was finally changed to "Freer".
"John Frier (ffrier) had a warrant out of the Secretary's Office dated Sep. 3, 1694, signed by the Honourable Thomas Smith, Esq., Landgrave and Governor, for 100 acres of land on the account of arrival rights for himself and his w ife, Sarah, all which said persons were imported into this part of the Province in the year (blank) by (blank) the said John Frier is obliged to signe the counter part of the indented deed within 90 days after admeasuring of said land is free to be run ou t and granted to any other persons use whatever. To Stephen Bull, Esq., Surveyor.", ("Warrants for Lands in SC, 1672-1711", A.S. Salley.)
On 29 June 1697, John Fryar purchased for 4 pounds from Thomas Cary, 200 acres on Wadmalaw near Charles Town. The family lived on Johns Island. (ibid., p. 220)
On 2 January 1698, John Freer had a grant for 200 acrees in Colleton Co.: Southside of Wadmelaw River, Northwest on said River, West on William Green, South on William Winter, East on Bonum Sam." ("Sec. St, O, Prop. Grants&qu ot;, Vol. 38, p. 359)
Recorded on 4 December 1710, John Fryar had a warrant for 200 acres in Collet on Co., ("Warrants for Lands in SC, 1672-1711", AS Salle)
John Friar Freer died 14 January 1709. "Sarah Freer & William Gibbons executed a bond to Gov. Johnson for Sarah's proper administration of the estate of John Friar/Freer late of Collet on Co., deceased 14 January 1708/09."
What is the connection between William Gibbons and John & Sarah Freer? William Gibbons came to Charles Town, SC from Barbados before 10 July 1677. In the Barbados research was found the will of Thomas Gibbons, planter of St. George s Parish, Barbados (27 April 1692, Proved 7 June 1692): Daughters, Elizabeth Gibbons, Sarah Gibbons, & Ann Gibbons...; my wife...; my said Sarah Gibbons, Executrix; friend Thomas Estwick and brother John Jemmett, Executors in Trust.
