One Man's Documentary:
A Memoir of the Early Years of the National Film Board
Written by Graham McInnes
Notes and Introduction by Gene Walz
McInnes was one of the first people hired by John Grierson; as a
scriptwriter, producer, and director, he has over forty NFB films to his
credit. Son of famous British novelist Angela Thirkell and brother of
notorious 1960s novelist Colin MacInnes, Graham wrote four other memoirs,
two highly-acclaimed novels and two books on Canadian art. He died in
Paris as the first Canadian ambassador to
UNESCO before he could completely finish the manuscript. The book is a
lively, insider's look at the Film Board, one that dispells the notion
that the NFB was a boring, bureaucratic, earnest place. Seth Feldman says
that "it's like picking up a 1940s issue of The New Yorker."
