2.6 Screen Layout

The DNA/GUI screen consists of four regions: Commands, Status Information, Image Information, and Image as shown in Figure 2.1. The Commands, Status Information, and Image Information regions appear in the top one-third of the screen while the Image region covers the lower two-thirds.

A. Commands Region.

Main menu and submenus are displayed here. Selection of any menu item (clicking MB1) results in a submenu being displayed to the right of the main menu.

Instructions, status information, and error messages are communicated to the operator here. The operator should become accustomed to paying attention to this window. At any time, the operator may scroll through the contents of this window. Move the pointer to the vertical scrollbar to the left of the window, depress and hold MB2, and move the pointer up or down to scroll.

Particular information regarding the "primary image" (the image to be analyzed) is entered by the operator here.

The Image Region is subdivided into several regions.


D-1 Primary Image.

The primary image to be analyzed is displayed here.

D-2 Vertical Scrollbar.

The vertical scrollbar is used for horizontal fragment-size editing.

D-3 Fragment Sizes.

The sizes of the bands in the template-definition file are displayed here after spatial normalization. In a different color, an axis of pixel index values and tic marks are displayed.

D-4 Magnify.

A magnified portion of the primary image corresponding to the area surrounding the current mouse position is displayed in this window.

D-5 Colorbar.

The mapping between intensity values and color is shown in the colorbar to the right of the image.

D-6 Color-Table Adjustments.

Interactive adjustments to the installed color map may be made using the buttons and sliders in this window.

D-7 Toggle Buttons.

There are 3 toggle buttons above the vertical scrollbar. The bottom button displays a popup of a 2X magnification of the crop box. The middle button is a 3-way toggle for displaying the lane labels, lane index values, and inheritance codes; the 3 states are above the crop box, below the crop box, and off. The top button is a 3-way toggle for displaying allele sizes; the 3 states are left of the crop box, right of the crop box, and off.
