Inductively
Coupled Plasma Optical Emmision Spectrometer
(ICP-OES)
Environmental
analysis encompasses
testing for
the presence of elements
in the environment that
either should not be present
or at a level higher
than what would occur
naturally.
At high levels many
elements can be detrimental
to the health of animals
and humans. Some
problematic elements may
include lead, mercury,
cadmium, and
arsenic. Some
elements at high
levels may promote the
growth of an unwanted
organism
and therefore have
an indirect effect
on the
environment.
The MCAL ICP-OES
instrument
can analyse
over 70 elements.
The instrument can
analyse multiple
elements in
one run.
An
autosampler provides
the instrument
with a new
sample every 3
to 5 min. making
it possible
to analyse
many samples
at a
reasonable
cost.
Standards are run to determine
that the best results are obtained
for accuracy and precision.
