"Repurposed Battery for Energy Storage in Applications of Renewable Energy for Grid Applications"

Dexter Williams (M.Sc. student)
Supervisor: Dr. Aniruddha Gole

Description of Project

A battery management system was developed. The system was capable of managing aged electric vehicle batteries that had been removed from electric vehicles for use in stationary applications. The project looked at repurposing lithium ion batteries from electric vehicles and how the aging of the batteries would affect its use in a stationary energy storage system. A converter system was modeled, simulated and constructed to step-up and step-down the voltage between the power system and the batteries. The converter allows the controller to support the voltage of the power system and charge the batteries. Furthermore, the controller is capable of managing and maintaining the batteries connected to the converter system.
