"Analysis of Mixed Inverter/Rectifier Multi-Infeed HVDC Systems"

Aim of Project

1. Find the proper index to quantify the AC strength to the DC line in the mixed inverter/rectifier multi-Infeed HVDC system.
2. Investigate the impact of the voltage interaction between rectifier and inverter on the Commutation Failure (CF) and Transient Overvoltage (TOV) characteristics of the MI system.

Description of Project

In pure inverter multi-infeed HVDC systems, an index referred to as the multi-infeed short circuit ratio (MIESCR) has been proposed, which quantifies the maximum available power (MAP) and the power/voltage stability limit. However, the index in its proposed form is not directly applicable in mixed inverter/rectifier multi-infeed HVDC systems. A new modified form of the index is introduced, making the index applicable in the two type multi-infeed HVDC systems.

Commutation Failure (CF) and Transient Overvoltage (TOV) in mixed inverter/rectifier multi-infeed HVDC systems with different ac strengths and levels of voltage interaction are also studied in this research. The results reveal that electrical proximity of a rectifier station improves the inverter station performance, making its behaviour similar to that of a station connected into a stronger ac network. TOV and CF susceptibility are reduced.
