Short Design
Project 1: 40 Page 0r
10000 Word Limit Due
February 28th at 2:30pm 15% of your
final grade Design Project 2: to be done in groups of 4-5
students. Design a crank shaft made from steel, aluminum alloy, or titanium alloy
to transmit a torque amplitude of 500Nm with a mean torque of 250Nm. The
input has a square cross section and the output consists of a 15cm long crank
arm with a circular cross section. Support bearings are 15cm apart and are
located on one side of the crank. Your design must function at least 500000
times without failing and must be as light as possible and reasonably priced.
Account for the failure modes such as yielding, fracture, and fatigue in your
design and be sure to state any and all assumptions. Note: peer evaluations MAY be used if deemed necessary by individual teams to shift grades for Project 1 on an individual team basis and would therefore be due with the project submittal. Use the summary sheet to record the scores you have given your team mates based on their performances which are assessed via the worksheet. Should any score fall below 75, you must attach peer eval worksheets for all team members to the peer eval summary sheet. Long Design
Project 2: 80 Page or
20000 Word Limit Due April 6th at 2:30pm via email, include
MECH3652 in the subject line 35% of your
final grade No drafts In different groups of 4-5 students, design a
suitable power transmission system for the following scenario. You must
design the corresponding belt drive, chain drive, and gear drive and
determine which option is the best and you may define a suitable application
to frame your decision process. For the best drive option, you are also asked
to design the output shaft including: material, dimensions, spline, keys,
retaining rings, bearings, etc. Input power = 1.25hp input speed = 5000rpm output speed = 500rpm life = 50hours output shaft power delivered via a spline
connection output shaft dimension = 15cm, from bearing centre to bearing centre with
the gear, sheave, or sprocket located between the two bearings and the spline
connection located outside of the two bearings. Note: peer evaluations WILL be used to shift grades for Project 2 and are due with final project submittal. Use the summary sheet to record the scores you have given your team mates based on their performances which are assessed via the worksheet. Should any score fall below 75, you must attach peer eval worksheets for all team members to the peer eval summary sheet. |
