Michif Project
This project, called "Word-building in Michif" has been in collaboration with the Louis Riel Institute with help from the Manitoba Métis Federation and of course the help of numerous Elder Michif speakers. The primary goal of this project is to build a Michif-English database complete with soundfiles, from scratch, which will be representative of Manitoba Michif speakers. Furthermore, a free iPhone app is also at the alpha testing development phase, based on this same database
This dictionary, when public, will be available at michifdictionary.org. An article outlining the dictionary creation process is in development.
This project has been generously funded by a 2007 SSHRC Aboriginal Research Grant.
I am also working on analyzing aspects of Michif French as spoken in
Saint Laurent, Manitoba, in comparison with other Laurentian French
varieties. I have published one paper on the back vowels which is in
press, and am working on analyzing rhythmic differences in a joint
project with Christian Guilbault at Simon Fraser University.
