Lévis, Québec

Modern Lévis was formed 01 January 2002 by the amalgamation of ten cities: Charny, Lévis, Pintendre, Sainte-Hélène-de-Breakeyville, Saint-Étienne-de-Lauzon, Saint-Jean-Chrysostome, Saint-Joseph-de-la-Pointe-de-Lévy, Saint-Nicolas, Saint-Rédempteur, and Saint-Romuald-d'Etchemin. The prior city of Lévis was formed in 1989 by the merger of Lévis, Lauzon and Saint-David-de-l'Auberivière (Wikipedia).

Principal System

Levis Electric Railway Company (08 December 1902 - early 1906)
street railway/light rail funicular Incorporated 1901 (Que.), company established 04 January 1902. An elevator (enclosed funicular) was opened connecting the lower and upper parts of Lévis 26 January 1904. Company sold at sheriff's auction in June 1905 and subsequently reorganized in 1906 as the LCRy. (Grumley).

Levis County Railway Company (early 1906 - Spring 1919)
street railway/light rail funicular Fire destroyed the elevator 05 December 1910. Further financial difficulty resulted in the incorporation of a new company in 1919. (Grumley).

Lévis Tramways ticket Levis Tramways Company (Spring 1919 - 20 November 1921)
street railway/light rail la Compagnie de Tramways de Lévis. Incorporated 1919 (Que.) to acquire the LCRy. Formal name change from LCRy to LTyCo occured 22 December 1924. A carbarn fire 21 February 1921 destroyed most of the rolling stock. A skeletal service was maintained until November 1921. (Grumley).

Levis Tramways Company (11 April 1922 - 01 July 1948)
street railway/light rail la Compagnie de Tramways de Lévis. Street railway service recommenced April 1922 and continued until the franchise expired in 1946. Buses introduced 1927. Company name changed to LTCo 1948. (Grumley).

(RS, TNC) (not in CUTA 1991/2, CUTA 1989 or CUTA 1988). Adopted the marketing name RTS 1993 (Jacques Matte 1997).

Réseau Trans-Sud (1993 - 31 December 2001)
Operational marketing name of the CITRSQ. Serving Lévis-Lauzon, Saint-Romuald-d'Etchemin, and Charny.

Societe de transport de Levis 1107 Novabus LFS with le Levisien branding (David A. Wyatt 2015 Jun 12) Société de transport de Lévis (01 January 2002 - present)
Name changed in coordination with municipal amalgamation. STL provides service itself in an east sector including Lévis, Saint-Jean-Chrysostome, Saint-Romuald-d'Etchemin, Charny, and Breakeyville. Service in the the west sector (Bernières, Saint-Nicolas, Saint-Rédempteur, and Saint-Étienne-de-Lauzon) and Pintendre are operated by Autocars des Chutes Inc. AdC Inc. is a member of Groupe Autobus Auger (website 2007). STL also administers an “out of territory” service contract for Saint-Lambert-de-Lauzon. Secondary Systems

Lévis ferry ticket Lévis - Québec Ferry Ltd. (circa 1855 - 1976)
ferry Ticket lettered la Traverse de Levis Limitée. The Armstrong family, who also operated the funicular at Québec (JM 1997).

Société des Traversiers du Québec (? - present)
ferry Current operator of the longstanding ferry service between Lévis and Québec.

Autobus la Québecoise Ltée (1982 - 1986)
From 1932 to 1960 and again from 1970 to 1982 transit in Saint-Jean-Chrysostome was provided by the same operators as Lévis. Between 1960 and 1970 service was provided by the same operators as Saint-Romuald-d'Etchemin. Between 1982 and 1986 Saint-Jean-Chrysostome declined service by the regional operator in favour of AlQ Ltée. From 1986 Saint-Jean has been served by the principal Lévis operator (see Lévis above). Saint-Jean-Chrysostome was annexed to Lévis 01 January 2002. (Jean Breton 2009).

Pintendre Systems

Autobus Pintendre (1994 - 31 December 2001)
Provincial map of 1995 shows a municipal bus service (unnamed) from Pintendre to nearby Lévis (email 1996). Operated under contract by Autobus la Québecoise Ltée from 1997 to 2000. Contract operator 2000 to 2001 was Autocars des Chutes Inc.. Pintendre annexed to Lévis 01 January 2002 after which des Chutes continued to operate the Pintendre routes of the Lévis system under contract. (Jean Breton 2009).

Pintendre was incidentally connected to Lévis by a long series of intercity operators:

Saint-Étienne-de-Lauzon, Saint-Nicholas, Bernières, and Saint-Rédempteur Systems

Saint-Étienne-de-Lauzon, Saint-Nicholas, Bernières and Saint-Rédempteur were all annexed to Lévis 01 January 2002.

Service to Bernières from 08 May 1984. Extended service to Saint-Nicholas September 1984 and Saint-Rédempteur 27 February 1985. Bus service ended in bankruptcy in 1987. (Jean Breton 2009).

Autocars des Chutes Inc. (Fall 1989 - 01 January 2002)
Municipally subsidized bus service from Saint-Étienne-de-Lauzon, Saint-Nicolas, Bernières, and Saint-Rédempteur to Lévis. Responsibility for service transferred to STL 2002 (see above) which continued to contract with AdC Inc. (Jacques Matte 1997, Jean Breton 2009).

Charny Systems

Charny shares transit operator history with Lévis from 1931 to 1961, and after 1970. Transit in Charny became the responsibility of the CITRSQ in 1979. Charny was annexed to Lévis 01 January 2002.

la Compagnie de Tramways de Lévis. Transit operator in Lévis. Bus service from Breakyville to Québec via Charny and Saint-Romuald-d'Etchemin implemented early 1931. Second service from Lévis to Charny via Saint-David and Saint-Romuald added 26 September 1931. (Jean Breton 2009). Company name changed to LTCo 1948.

Saint-Telesphore was annexed to Saint-Romuald in the 1970's. Saint-Romuald was annexed to Lévis 01 January 2002.
