Interested in research on Infant Development? Contact the Infant Development Milestone Study. We are looking for graduate students to work on our project.

Developmental Trajectories

A largely unrealized goal of developmental research is to describe the pattern of a child's developmental along important dimensions, and I have had a long-standing interest in describing trajectories and how children differ on them.

Activity Level Trajectory

  • Over a number of studies and a decade of research we collected instrumented measures of customary movement over a 1- or 2-day period.
  • In total, we had movement data from 840 individuals, whose ages ranged from 6 weeks to 52 years.
  • We (Eaton, McKeen, & Campbell, 2001) plotted each individual's average level of movement against age in the following figure.
  • An inverted U-shaped pattern emerged.
  • The peak in motor activity level occurs in middle childhood, later than expected.
